Re: International Biology Olympiad participation

Dear Friends,

From Sunday, July 15, 2007 to Sunday, July 22, 2007, the University of Saskatchewan will be a title sponsor to the 18th Annual International Biology Olympiad (IBO). Hosting the IBO is an opportunity for the U of S to showcase itself to top high school students and their advisors fromup to 62 countries. The IBO Planning Committee is still in need of Team Guides to ensure that each country has the support that it requires during their stay in Canada.

Are you between the ages of 18 – 25? Want an opportunity to meet students from 55 countries around the world? The IBO Planning Committee is in need of Team Guides who are available the entire week of July 15 – 22, 2007 to act as ambassadors for these international biology teams. Team Guides are required to: - escort their team within the U of S campus and participate in all social activities, ceremonies, and tourist events. This includes an overnight trip to Wanuskewin and a day trip to Prince Albert National Park. - stay in a U of S Residence with their team for the week -Team Guides will receive free room and board, as well as meals. - be on campus from approximately 7:30 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. for the week, but will have a chance to leave their Team Guide duties on Tuesday, July 17 and Thursday, July 19 from approximately 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

There are many benefits of being a Team Guide! You can:
-interact with international students and professionals
-practice your 2nd language
-receive free room and board for a week
-attend a volunteer appreciation event!

Team Guides are required to have completed a Criminal Record Check and submit an IBO Volunteer Application form.

Register as a volunteer today, by visiting:
http://ibo2007.usask.ca/volunteers.html

A schedule of the week is available online at:
http://ibo2007.usask.ca/events.html

For more information contact Vanessa Ross Young by e-mail at vkry.ibo@gmail.com or by telephone at 306-966-1799.

Re: Postponement of Pike Lake trip to 28th July, 2007.

Dear friends,

Thanks for promptly registering for the Pike Lake trip. 30 students have already registered. I am very happy about the response. I appreciate it.
I am very sorry to inform you guys that our Pike Lake trip which was scheduled to July 14th should be postponed to July 28th, 2007 due to the clash of events from two associations. Hindu Society of Saskatchewan (HSS) is organizing a Garage sale at the temple premises on July 14th and July 15th. The HSS committee requested us to postpone our event so that both the events would be successful. So We decided to postpone the trip to July 28th, 2007. We are very sorry for the inconvenience. The registrations are still open. Please e mail to srinivas.seekallu@usask.ca asap so that we can order T-shirts and make other proper arrangements. If the response is good, we may go to book one more bus.
The bus will board at 9.30AM near Assiniboine Hall (101, Cumberland Avenue South).
I wish everyone to note the change in trip schedule and mark 28th July on your calender for ISA. The elections for the next executive body will be on 28th or 29th July, which will be confirmed later. I request those individuals who are interested to become an ISA executive member to mail me asap.

Thanks.

Have a nice weekend.

By Any Means Necessary Documentary - April 19 Broadway Theatre

Dear friends and fellow International students at UofS,

some people consider the struggles of Indigenous peoples against the

ongoing colonization by the Canadian state and the multinational

corporations as a domestic issue. But Indigenous (aka Aboriginal,

Native) Nations are sovereign nations and thus it becomes an

international human rights issue. I am sure that in your countries,

too, there are still ongoing struggles against Western imperialism and

control, and that the Indigenous peoples in some of your countries are

still oppressed and marginalized by the dominant society.

if you would like to discuss this more, please email me, as this is of

academic and general interest to me. Thank you and good luck on your

exams, if you still have them ;)

Please circulate widely!

"By Any Means Necessary" is a documentary that chronicles the Treaty 10

right to hunt and the legal journey of the Buffalo River Dene Nation

from Northern Saskatchewan.  The documentary reviews the legal case in

Saskatchewan, the refusal to be heard at the Supreme Court of Canada,

and their international legal endeavours.

Broadway Theatre

Date:  Thursday, April 19, 2007

Time:  7:00 p.m.

Cost: $5.00

We look forward to seeing many people supporting this event.
